During the course of our bike ride, we used 5 different bikes. The details of each of these are shown below.

The BMX

The BMX was the first of 5 bikes that were used on the trip. It had no brakes whatsoever and the back wheel was not properly connected. However, its tyres were semi-inflated, and it pedalled fairly well. After a day walking and searching for bikes, it was the greatest thing we’d ever seen in our lives.
Distance travelled – 15 miles.

The Scooter

The scooter arrived minutes after the BMX. It was emblazoned with WWF wrestling logos and would’ve been the Rolls Royce of scooters ‘back in the day’. Its tyres were made of foam, and it was so slow that we had to push even when going downhill.
Distance travelled – 15 miles.

Pinky

Compared to the scooter and BMX, Pinky was a dream to ride. It was a girl’s mountain bike, lurid pink in colour, that provoked taunts from all the male school kids that we passed. Ben was particularly fond of it, as it was nearly as camp as his shirt.
Distance travelled – 220 miles.

The Falcon

The Falcon was a 5 speed junior racer with a saddle made from the hardest material known to man. Its chain fell off every few hundred metres, and the rusted handlebars were about a metre lower than the seat. Despite causing the rider to become a hunchback, it was incredibly speedy and loyal. It was the longest serving of all the bikes.
Distance travelled – 980 miles.

The Horse

The Horse was the biggest bike that was ever built. It was acquired from the Police in Bath, presumably after King Kong failed to reclaim it. Its seat was so high, that when the rider stood up to pedal they would be closer to the ground than when seated. It was however a proper bike, with about 30,000 gears and a drinking bottle holder.
Distance travelled – 760 miles
